Our mission is to advance cross-cultural understanding and international friendships through the development of lasting relationships between Arlington, Virginia and its Sister Cities.
Description:
In partnership with its four Sister Cities, the Arlington Sister City Association (ASCA) promotes greater international understanding through educational exchanges for students at all levels, exchanges in arts and culture, promotion of economic linkages, and community events with an international focus. Arlington has sister city relationships with Aachen, Germany; Reims, France; Coyoacan, Mexico; and, San Miguel, El Salvador. Our major activities include an elementary exchange with Aachen, high school exchanges with Aachen and Reims, university partnership with Aachen, social activiites around international themes, and special tourism opportunities. The relationship with San Miguel is new and dynamic with programs just getting underway this year.
History:
The ASCA was founded in 1994 by a group of Arlington residents with an interest in establishing international partnerships. The first sister city agreements were signed with Coyoacan and Aachen. Reims became an official sister city to Arlington in 2004, and a friendship agreement was signed with San Miguel on June 9, 2006.
