The Hercules Library is one of 25 community libraries that comprise the Contra Costa County Library. Opened in 2007, the Hercules Library is the community's architectural jewel, and serves a diverse community invested in educational growth and an inclusive vision of community development.
Description:
Contra Costa County Library's mission is to bring people and ideas together. We do so through freely lending books, DVDs, audiobooks, & e-books; providing community gathering space, cultural events, author lectures, storytimes and the like. The library is supported by a foundation, a friends of the library group, as well as a huge amount of volunteer time by community members who perform the majority of shelving and collection maintenance.
History:
The library opened in December of 2006. Hercules had been the second largest city in California sans a library when the state library decided to award the city funds (on a matching basis) to build the library. The building is a product of city, county and state collaboration.
