The mission of The Arc of San Francisco is to serve people with developmental disabilites, individuals with similar needs, and their families, by providing access to a full range of services that advance self-determination, dignity and quality of life.
Description:
The Arc serves over 450 adults every day by providing services that include job training and placement, residential living supports, community access training, leisure and recreation for seniors and various social activities and outings. The Arc developed the first affordable housing for individuals with developmental disabilities in San Francisco in 2001.
History:
The Arc of San Francisco was founded in 1951 by parents who were dissatisfied with the lack of support available to families with children with developmental disabilities. At that time, the only services the government provided was in the state's eight developmental centers. Today, more than 190,000 Californians with developmental disabilities are served in the community.
