Point Reyes National Seashore

Point Reyes National Seashore was established to preserve and protect wilderness, natural ecosystems, and cultural resources along the diminishing undeveloped coastline of the United States. Located just an hour's drive from a densely populated metropolitan area, the Seashore is a sanctuary for countless plant and animal species and a haven for human inspiration, education, and recreation.

Description:
Point Reyes National Seashore encompasses over 71,000 acres, including 33,000 acres of wilderness area. Over 2.5 million people visit the park annually. Estuaries, windswept beaches, coastal grasslands, salt marshes, and coniferous forests create a haven of 86 miles of unspoiled and undeveloped coastline for 27 threatened and endangered species, 65 species of mammals, 28 species of reptiles and amphibians, 490 species of birds, and over 900 species of flowering plants. Abundant recreational opportunities include 147 miles of hiking trails, backcountry campgrounds, and numerous beaches.

History:
Point Reyes National Seashore was established by President John F. Kennedy on September 13, 1962, "to save and preserve, for purposes of public recreation, benefit, and inspiration, a portion of the diminishing seashore of the United States that remains undeveloped..."

Point Reyes National Seashore is managed by the National Park Service, established in 1916, whose mission it is to preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values the national park system for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.

Directions:

Point Reyes is located approximately 35 miles north of San Francisco on Highway 1 along the west coast of California. Travelers may approach the park from the winding scenic Highway 1, either northbound or southbound. You can also reach the park via Sir Francis Drake Boulevard or Point Reyes/Petaluma Road.
