BCASCO seeks to improve the quality of life for senior citizens and all people in this nation, in Maryland, and in Baltimore County.
Description:
BCASCO is an association of volunteers providing a forum to exchange information about, and occasionally take action on, issues of interest to senior citizens in Baltimore County. Our goal is to provide a better quality of life for seniors and all people. We seek, for instance, better education, housing, and health care for the young as well as the old; for the poor as well as the wealthy. We welcome into membership any like-minded organizations and individuals. BCASCO is an umbrella organization of many people and organizations. Our membership consists of senior and retiree organizations, businesses, nonprofit agencies, and individuals who support our goals. We meet on the second Fridays of January, March, May, September, and November at the Towson United Methodist Church (see directions). The meetings, generally from 9:45 a.m. to 12 noon, often feature speakers, literature and display tables, and opportunities to discuss relevant topics with government officials and other influential people of the community. Often we'll hold a mostly sociable holiday meeting in December. Supplementing our meetings are the periodic newsletter, Senior Power, and our Web site (which see). Occasionally we sponsor a bus trip to Annapolis or Washington to bring our message directly to the politicians in government. And occasionally we hold an event just for fun.
History:
Back in the spring of 1976 a small group of concerned retirees formed a coalition. Their aim was to study the problems facing the elderly in Baltimore County, problems not uncommon to the aging population of the nation. After 2½ years, an image was formed, an idea began to take shape, the pieces began to fit, and, in 1978, BCASCO became a reality. Fifty-three organizations sent their representatives to BCASCO's first meeting. Today, BCASCO is recognized as the spokesperson for the elderly in Baltimore County.
