The Time Bank is a service exchange based on Time Dollars, the currency of equality that empowers individuals to utilize their assets, to enhance their lives, neighborhoods, and communities.

Description:
We are working closely with many organizations in the Northeastern U.S., including several in Maryland, in order to provide community-based organizations with volunteers, training, and inspiration. In our next endeavor, we are looking for AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteers to earn a stipend and benefits through their work with Partners in Care, an organization that helps low income seniors with various issues: transportation; companionship; and the securing of needed resources, services and materials - all using the Time Bank exchange model.

History:
Richard Rockefeller (the founder of Portland Time Bank) felt compelled to bring the concept of Time Banking to Maine after hearing Dr. Edgar Cahn speak; he began to share his vision in 1996. In 1997, Maine hosted an International Time Dollar Congress in cooperation with Dr. Edgar Cahn (Founder of Time Dollars), bringing together 40 Time Banks from all over the world. For many, it was the first opportunity to share experiences about their programs and learn from others. For Portland Time Bank, the Congress inspired new vision and direction. Our very committed, and visionary, Board of Directors decided it was time to grow a local (model) Time Bank and Portland Time Bank was born, formerly known as Maine Time Dollar Network. We have been serving the Portland area now since 1997, while looking for new locations to spread our mission. Currently, we have a few opportunities in Time Banks in Baltimore, Pasadena, Frederick, and Easton, MD.
