Volunteer Maryland’s mission is to build stronger, healthier communities by developing programs that meet critical needs in the areas of education, human needs, public safety, homeland security, and the environment.

Description:
Each Volunteer Maryland Coordinator works with a nonprofit or government agency to develop a viable volunteer or service-learning program that enhances the organization's ability to deliver quality services to clients or the community. To develop the structure necessary to sustain the program, the Volunteer Maryland Coordinator:

  • assesses the needs of clients, staff, and key community players;
  • creates volunteer program policies and procedures, position descriptions, and orientation and training sessions for volunteers or service-learning students;
  • initiates recruitment drives and media outreach to engage community residents, business members, students, and others in service;
  • conducts volunteer recognition activities and on-going program evaluation;
  • develops partnerships with faith-based organizations, businesses, and schools to strengthen the program; and
  • trains key staff and volunteer leaders in best practices of program management.

The impact of the partnership is significant for participating agencies. In evaluations conducted at the end of the partnership year, 90 percent of Service Sites report that they achieved their measurable objectives for client and community impact. Ninety percent also report substantial improvement in the quality of their programs and their agency’s ability to manage volunteers or service-learning students.

Volunteer Maryland Coordinators integrate management of the program into the existing organization so that the Service Site can maintain or improve the level of volunteer activity at the end of the partnership year. In the most recent annual follow-up surveys (July 2007), 86 percent of former sites reported that they maintained or improved their capacity to manage volunteers or service-learning students since the end of the Volunteer Maryland partnership year.

The Volunteer Maryland experience also greatly impacts the members by reinforcing a lasting service ethic. In annual follow-up surveys, nearly 100 percent of program alumni report that they continue to be actively engaged in service as community volunteers, members of the AmeriCorps Alumni Association, community board members, volunteer and nonprofit managers, teachers, government employees, and more.

History:
Since its inception in 1992, Volunteer Maryland's AmeriCorps members have established volunteer and service-learning programs across the state and pioneered new ways to effectively engage citizens in service. The first 478 members worked with 450 agencies to recruit, train, and manage more than 73,000 volunteers, whose service is valued at over $19.7 million. Volunteer Maryland partners with a diverse group of community-based organizations each year to address local issues
