Mission: To work in partnership with the community to develop, operate, and support programs that reduce vulnerability and promotes personal growth, stability, and self-sufficiency among low-income residents.
Description:
Community Assistance Network was incorporated in 1965 as a human services agency and the legally-designated Community Action Agency for Baltimore County. We have a staff of over 40 full-time and part-time employees. CAN is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors not to exceed 21 members who represent the Public, Private and Community Sectors.
History:
Community Assistance Network is a 40+ year old human services agency dedicated to improving the quality of life for low-income residents in Baltimore County. Our mission is to help them achieve economic, social and family stability through a broad range of programs and services offered by the organization. Throughout our history we have partnered with many organizations, both private and public. For example, we operate the Fuel Fund of Baltimore County and were the second fuel fund to be established in the country more than 20 years ago. We were instrumental in getting fuel funds off the ground. Our other programs include housing assistance (for nearly 30 years we have been recognized by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as a Housing Counseling Agency)to help homeowners at risk of losing their housing; outreach and referral services; employment assistance; youth programs (after school and day care); and weatherization. We have a long history of collaborating with Baltimore County in providing shelter for the homeless. During our 40+ years, we have advocated on behalf of low-income people and serve as their voice to local, State and Federal policymakers.
