Description:
The Coalition to End Childhood Lead Poisoning is committed to the creation of resources, programs, and policies to prevent childhood lead poisoning and home-based environmental health hazards. We work in collaboration with families, community organizations, educators, government agencies, insurers, property owners, and health care providers to construct real, attainable and cost-effective means to create lead-safe and healthy homes.

History:
The Coalition to End Childhood Lead Poisoning (the Coalition) is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization that was founded in 1986 as Parents Against Lead, a grassroots volunteer effort. It became a funded organization in 1993. Today, the Coalition is nationally recognized as one of the premier organizations on lead poisoning prevention and Healthy Homes.

Through its direct service programs, advocacy and strategic planning, the Coalition is credited with leading the effort to achieve a 91 percent reduction in childhood lead poisoning in Baltimore over the last decade. This dramatic decline in lead poisoning has outpaced every other jurisdiction in the country, according to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Centers for Disease Control. HUD has also adopted 8 of the Coalition's program elements as mandatory activities for all of its lead hazard control grantees nationally.

Since 1994, the Coalition has been the principal party in the design of historic legislation that ignited and sustained Maryland's progress to reduce childhood lead poisoning by moving public policy and private sector actions to primary prevention. During that time, its outreach, education and advocacy programs have reached over 3.5 million individuals.
