Chimes and its subsidiaries are acknowledged international leaders and models of excellence in providing educational, vocational, employment, habilitative, residential, leisure and other support services for people with barriers to independent living.
Description:
Chimes provides the skills and support to assist each person with barriers to independent living, including individuals with developmental disabilities and other handicapping conditions. The guiding philosophy of Chimes is based on the belief that every individual has the right to develop his or her fullest potential, and the agency recognizes the uniqueness of each person by promoting feelings of human dignity and a sense of self worth. Programs and services are developed and provided to each person with special needs utilizing an interdisciplinary approach. Supports and services are implemented in a manner which is culturally normative, age appropriate, and appropriate to his or her needs.
History:
In 1947 The School of the Chimes was founded by a group of parents who wanted a program enabling their children with moderate mental retardation to reach the highest level of function possible. It was the first school of its kind in the state of Maryland. From these parents' vision grew The Chimes, a not-for-profit, nonsectarian agency, assisting thousands of people of all ages and varying levels of ability. Today, The Chimes operates agencies in Maryland, Virginia, Washington, DC, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Israel. Its wide range of programming includes habilitative, residential, educational, vocational, employment, and support services geared to meet individual needs.
