United Ministries is a housing and social justice organization dedicated to assisting homeless men who want to change their lives, and to changing community attitudes about the homeless. Through successful partnerships homelessness will be reduced in both its magnitude and severity, as all people are treated with dignity and have access to both the services and housing that they and their families need.

Description:
Earl's Place, a transitional housing program for homeless men in recovery from alcohol or substance abuse, provides long-term (up to two years) housing and supportive services. At any given time seventeen men are working on becoming productive citizens. The men are assisted with working on the causes of their homelessness, assisted with obtaining GED or continuing education, assisted with locating job training or employment opportunities. The men who successfully complete the program are assisted with locating, securing and maintaining permanent housing.

History:
United Ministries was formed by a task force of United Church of Christ (UCC) churches in Baltimore City who volunteered at a soup kitchen, The Supper Club, at First United Evangelical UCC. Earl's Place is the first project and is named for Earl Johnson, a homeless man who was a client at The Supper Club, who died before the project was completed. The program opened in December 1997 and we have been serving men since February 1998.
