Carroll Museums, Inc., a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational corporation, was founded in 2002 to revitalize the Carroll Mansion and the Phoenix Shot Tower, two beloved Baltimore landmarks. Carroll Museums spearheads improvement efforts with the support of the public and private sectors.

Description:
The Carroll Mansion and Phoenix Shot Tower are historically significant at the city, state, and national levels. They are also key components of their historic Jonestown neighborhood and have the potential to play a pivotal role in the future of the area and the quality of community life. Carroll Museums recognizes this potential and has formulated a strategic plan that 1) honors and preserves the sites’ heritage 2) seeks innovative ways to interpret their past and 3) makes them active participants in their modern community.

History:
Carroll Museums has raised public and private funds to maintain, restore, program, and operate the Carroll Mansion and the Phoenix Shot Tower.

Our most recent success was securing an $80,000 grant from the Maryland Heritage Area toward restoration of Carroll Mansion's exterior. We have already repaired the Mansion’s spiral stair, hallways, and five interior rooms and have raised over $150,000 to upgrade the Mansion’s antiquated HVAC, roof and fire security system.

At the Shot Tower, we are working with the Willard Hackerman Academy at Towson University’s Fisher College of Science and Mathematics to create a science and technology program that will serve middle and high school students. The program will form a bridge of understanding between past scientific breakthroughs and their modern applications. While we develop programs at the Tower, we continue to seek funds for its restoration and stabilization. We have already rebuilt the Tower’s parapet and sash windows and created a sound and light show for Tower visitors.

Through all restoration work, Carroll Museums strives to keep both sites open to the public on a regular basis and to provide events and programs to garner interest and support.
