To provide a variety for quality educational, rehabilitative, residential and employment options for adults with developmental disabilities in a supportive environment to maximize opportunities for individual growth.
Description:
Athelas Institute provides specialized community day, vocational, supported employment and a continuum of residential and individuals supports customized to meet the needs of adults with developmental disabilities. The above described specialized day programs and emplyment services transcend the more traditional models frequently offered to persons with developmental disabilities. We are a growing but stable organization. Athelas continues to develop and maintain quality programs which provide many choices for the individuals served.
History:
Athelas Institute has provided community-based services for the past 32 years. In 1976, Athelas Institute began to develop innovative work and educational opportunities in the community for individuals who had previously been unable to do so. This was accomplished by developing supervised mobile crews doing jobs such as lawn care or work in hotels, by placing groups of people with a supervisor in other businesses, by starting our own business opportunities with a recycling operation and a restaurant and by placing individuals in community job placements. Educationally, Athelas developed a program in conjunction with Catonsville Community College which provided classes on campus and access to college facilities. This was first of its kind for programs in Maryland and continues to this day. Since its inception, Athelas continues to be a recognized leader in the field for providing creative programs which meet the needs of the individuals who come to us for services.
