Our mission is to promote the social and economic progress of people in developing regions of the world by marketing their products in a just and direct manner.
Description:
Our goal is to alleviate poverty and empower low-income people through trade, training and other forms of capacity building as they work to improve their lives. We assist artisans and farmers by: -Marketing their handcrafts and food products in a just and direct manner. -Providing development assistance through their community based organizations. -Educating consumers in the United States about economic justice and other cultures.
History:
The SERRV program had its earliest beginnings with persons who were serving with the Church of the Brethren in relief and reconstruction work in postwar Germany. They saw a need for help beyond food and shelter. Many of these refugees had handcraft skills. The first step was to bring a small amount of porcelain to the US where it was quickly sold. The new program was given the acronym SERRV meaning Sales Exchange for Refugee Rehabilitation Vocations. From the beginning SERRV was non-profit and although the volume of business has expanded over the years it's basic purposes have remained the same.
