The mission of the Cylburn Arboretum Association is to protect Cylburn as a place of open space, beauty and quiet; to ensure the preservation, enhancement and interpretation of its gardens, woodlands, historic buildings and collections as educational, environmental and recreational assets for the benefit of the City and the general public, in partnership with the City of Baltimore Recreation & Parks.
Description:
Cylburn Arboretum is a 200-acre public garden and nature preserve located 15 minutes from the Inner Harbor. The Cylburn Arboretum Association, a non-profit organization, has worked in partnership with the City for more than fifty years to ensure that the Arboretum's natural and cultural assets are preserved and enhanced. The Association conducts educational programs in natural history, resource management and ornamental horticulture (gardening) for a wide variety of audiences and age groups. Special events such as Market Day (May) draw large crowds from the City and region. Volunteers work directly with staff to maintain gardens and trails, work in the greenhouse, assist with special events and many daily administrative duties.
History:
The Cylburn Estate, built in the late 19th century, was purchased by the City of Baltimore in 1942 and became known as Cylburn Park. A group of dedicated volunteers, interested in natural history and gardening, came together in 1954 to work with the Parks Department on trails, garden maintenance and wildflower preservation. The Mansion would be used as a Garden Center with rooms for meetings, flower shows and lectures. In time, this group evolved into the current Cylburn Arboretum Association, which continues a strong partnership with the Division of Horticulture in preserving and maintaining this extraordinary place.
