Our mission: To provide rigorous self-help programs and a safe, caring environment to support men who are transitioning through the cycle of poverty, substance abuse and homelessness to self-sufficiency.
Description:
The Baltimore Station (TBS) is a recovery-oriented, therapeutic community for men who have become homeless largely due to a history of chronic substance abuse. TBS' program directly addresses the issues and root causes that led these men to the streets and lives of alcoholism and drug addiction. TBS' program operates in two former fire houses and collectively includes seventy-five beds in a dormitory setting. Program participants live in this communal setting for the program duration, which typically lasts from six to twenty-four months.
History:
Founded in 1987 by caring people in the neighborhood giving out blankets and hot meals, TBS (formerly known as South Baltimore Homeless Shelter) was incorporated in 1989. TBS acquired a vacant firehouse in 1991 - the South Baltimore Station (SBS) - from the city. From 1996 to 2002, SBS operated an emergency program for women and children at Christ Lutheran Church. In 2002, TBS increased the number of beds at SBS from 40 to 50. A second facility, Seton Hill Station, opened it's doors in July 2004 housing an additional 25 men.
