Preparing, Educating and Networking citizens and communities for disasters and emergencies that may occur at any time is the core of Baltimore County Citizen Corps Council. Our focus is to prevent or minimize the consequences of a disaster or threat to people's health, property and safety. We partner with agencies and volunteer organizations to instruct and engage citizen volunteers how to plan and prepare their family, community and workplace which will unify and strengthen Baltimore County and the state of Maryland
Description:
Disaster Preparedness and Education - Crime Prevention - First Aid - Fire Safety - Emergency Response and Recovery - Online Resources and Directory These are just a few of the volunteer components of Baltimore County Citizen Corps and as citizens of a changed nation, an opportunity is waiting for you to make a positive impact in your community and country. We are looking for volunteers interested in all aspects of preparing and strengthening communities in the event of a disaster or to respond to emergencies when called upon. We encourage people from all walks of life including our youth, seniors and entire families to train and partner with Interfaith groups, non-profits, local businesses, government agencies and organizations to prepare, educate and volunteer! Together we can, and will make a difference, but we need a strong volunteer force to accomplish this. Volunteers registered with Baltimore County Citizen Corps may be called upon to provide essential support to communities and agencies in Baltimore County before, during or after a crisis. Our volunteers have assisted hundreds of families in the recovery efforts of Hurricane Isabel and are diligently working to prepare for not IF, but WHEN the next emergency arises. Volunteers have participated in drills such as the BWI simulated plane crash, search and rescue exercises, setting up a mock Red Cross shelter along with vital record keeping and reporting of statistics and protocol for following standard operating procedures before, during or after a disaster.
History:
In response to the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 the USA Freedom Corps initiative was launched to inspire and enable all Americans to find ways to serve their community, their country, or the world. Citizen Corps, a component of USA Freedom Corps creates opportunities for individuals to volunteer to help their communities prepare for and respond to emergencies and disasters. It was created in 2002 and brings together local leaders, citizen volunteers and the network of first responder organizations. The goal is to have all citizens participate in making their communities safer, stronger, and better prepared for preventing and handling threats of terrorism, crime, and disasters of all kinds. Baltimore County Citizen Corps Council is among over 1200 councils nationwide and growing.
