The mission of the Baltimore Museum of Industry is to collect, preserve and interpret the industrial and technological heritage of the Baltimore region for the public by presenting educational programs and exhibits that explore the stories of Maryland's industries and the people who created and worked in them.

Description:
From food canning to broadcasting, BMI visitors can interact with the technologies and learn about the people who forged the Industrial Revolution and brought us to the 21st century. Step into vividly-recreated workshops on machining, printing, garment-making and metalworking.

Walk through an 1886 bank building... Step into the 1910 Bunting Pharmacy, where Noxema was invented... Learn about the country's first gas company. Walk along our Maryland Milestone Wall and experience local innovations which touched the world... from the world's first disposable bottle cap to America's first umbrella company... from the invention of the world's first typesetting machine to the invention of modern radar, and much, much more...

The BMI keeps the past alive through its hands-on collection designed to interpret Maryland's heritage through interactive galleries and the stories of workers. It inspires future innovations through role-playing educational programs that meet MSDE voluntary curriculum standards, weekend family activities and events, technology workshops for teachers, scout programs, senior tours and the Maryland State Engineering Challenges while preserving Maryland's unique culture.

History:
The Baltimore Museum of Industry (BMI) was founded in 1977 as a project of the Mayor's Office of the City of Baltimore to preserve the City's rapidly disappearing industrial heritage. In 1981, it incorporated as a private non-profit educational institution. In May of that year, the BMI moved into the historic Platt Oyster Cannery building (c.1870) in South Baltimore. The Museum launched its first capital campaign in 1989 towards the renovation of the facility to enhance its appearance and create first-rate gallery space for its exhibits.
The BMI is a leader in hands-on education
