The American Friends Service Committee's work is based on the Quaker belief in the worth of every person and faith in the power of love to overcome violence and injustice.

Description:
Since the AFSC's founding, it has aided people in need in many nations regardless of race, religion, or political belief. At the core of its work is building relationships within communities, between nations, and across borders. This span allows AFSC to carry grassroots voices to national and international forums, and to educate the public on the effect of government policies.

The Middle Atlantic Region of AFSC, headquartered in Baltimore, is comprised of six area offices, including one in Baltimore. AFSC's Baltimore-headquartered programs include the Baltimore Urban Peace Movement and Project Voice, which provides immigrant rights information and advocacy services. AFSC Middle Atlantic Regional programs also encompass Economic Justice and Youth Empowerment work.

History:
The AFSC was founded in 1917 by U.S. Quakers to provide conscientious objectors to war with alternatives to military service, such as aiding civilian victims. In 1947, the AFSC and the British Friends Service Council - now known as Quaker Peace and Social Witness - received the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of Friends worldwide for their "silent help from the nameless to the nameless".
