The Network provides persons who are unable to read for themselves access to daily newspapers and current magazines. Listeners receive a special radio from the Network which enables them to hear the broadcast.
Description:
The Radio Reading Network is an independent non-profit organization which serves persons who are either visually or physically impaired to the degree that they are unable to read for themselves. Volunteers read daily newspapers and current magazines over a type of closed circuit radio which is provided by the Network to the listeners. Scheduled programs include The Sun, New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and various County newspapers. A variety of magazines include Time, People, Sports Illustrated, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone. The service broadcasts twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, three hundred and sixty five days a year.
History:
The Network went on the air in July 1979 as Baltimore's Radio Reading Service. At that time the listening area was confined to the limits reached by the WBJC-FM signal. This was roughly described as Baltimore City and most of the Metropolitan Counties. In 1991 the Maryland Emergency Medical System began to relay the network signal by microwave to Frostburg and Princess Ann, Maryland. To reflect this growth the name was legally changed in January 1992. Today the service broadcasts on subcarriers of WBJC in Baltimore, WFWM in Frostburg and WESM in Princess Anne. The Network can also be head statewide on stereo television sets of the Second Audio Program (SAP).
