To profoundly enhance the end of life for individuals facing a life-limiting illness by providing compassionate professional hospice care, instructing family in the skills necessary to care for their loved one, supporting the patient's decisions for care, offering alternative care settings, and assisting family and loved ones in managing their grief.
Description:
Gilchrist Hospice Care, formerly known as Hospice of Baltimore, is the largest non-profit hospice organization in the state of Maryland. We provide medical, nursing, home health aid, spiritual and bereavement counseling and support, and volunteer assistance to terminally ill patients (no longer seeking curative treatment) and support to their families in Baltimore County and City and surrounding counties. GHC seeks to make an individual's remaining time as peaceful, comfortable and pain-free as possible. Patients are cared for in their home, in a long-term care facility or assisted living location, or at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care, a 24-bed inpatient hospice facility.
History:
In 1994, Gilchrist Hospice Care began providing physical, emotional, and spiritual end-of-life care and services to home-based patients and their families, then and now the centerpiece of the organization. With the opening of Gilchrist Center in 1996, a residential inpatient facility with all the amenities and comforts of home, GHC created a program to meed the needs of both patients at home and those who special circumstances required admission to Gilchrist.
