BELL's mission is to increase the academic achievements, self-esteem and life opportunities of elementary school aged children living in urban, low-income areas.

Description:
BELL targets under-performing students with the greatest academic, social and economic needs and provides them with a safe and supportive learning environment. We select a staff of certified educators who are highly trained college and graduate students who reflect the scholars' demographics and who are committed to serving as both tutors and teachers. BELL implements a research-based literacy and math curriculum focused on core skills, personal integrity, and greater self-image, and links to national and state learning standards. BELL involves parents in their children's education and social development.

History:
BELL was founded as an after-school program by a group of Black and Latino students at Harvard Law School in 1992. Working in partnership with parents and educational experts, the students developed an academically rigorous enrichment program for elementary school children. In 1996, BELL launched its Accelerated Learning Summer Program (BELL Summer) to provide year-round enrichment opportunities to the children who need them most
