The mission of the Baltimore City Public School System, in concert with students, families and the broader community, is to prepare all students to be responsible citizens and afford them the opportunity to acquire the skills, knowledge and abilities necessary to make informed decisions that lead to meaningful and productive lives.
Description:
Medfield Heights is a public elementary situated in North Baltimore City. This Pre-K through fifth grade school draws students from Woodbury, Medfield and Hoes Heights. There is a large diversity of students at Medfield: 50% Caucasian, 35% African American, 7% Asian/Pacific Islander and 3% Hispanic. According to 2007 test scores, 75% of first graders and 85% of second graders scored above the 50th percentile in reading (with 25.5% of second graders above the 90th percentile). 76% of first graders and 91% of second graders scored above the 50th percentile in math. 79% of third grade students, 87.7% of fourth grade students and 85.4% of fifth graders scored proficient or advanced in reading and 84.3% of third graders, 98% of fourth graders and 87.8% of fifth graders scored proficient or advanced in math. Medfield Heights outpaced city and state averages in all categories except third grade reading. 4th grade math scores at 98% were the HIGHEST in Baltimore City. Medfield Heights is one of the top five elementary schools in Baltimore City. The attendance rate at Medfield has been around 94% for the past five years. Medfield welcomes volunteers as it continually strives to develop strong ties within the community and enhancing relationships in order to create a positive and safe environment for students to become happy, healthy and well educated young adults. Experience Corps, Coldwell Banker mentors, Peace by Peace, Irvine Nature Center, the National Aquarium's Aquapartners, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts are just a few of the outside organizations that have partnered with the Medfield community over the past few years. There is also a full time Greater Homewood AmeriCorps*VISTA at the school who coordinates school-community partnerships. Despite Medfield's success in the academic realm and the abundant number of community partners, Medfield still lacks many things. The school needs money to pay for many programs, activities, school supplies and field trips that are part of the children's daily experience at Medfield. More volunteers and after school programs are also essential to Medfield. Without these valuable resources, the children will suffer from lack of guidance and supervision.
History:
Medfield Heights Elementary School opened in 1955. An annex building was added in the 1970s in order to accommodate the increasing number of students. Greater Homewood Community Corporation came to be affiliated with Medfield almost seven years ago, when it placed its first VISTA in the school. Due to the strong tie between the school and Greater Homewood, many opportunities have become available to students that would not have been otherwise.
