The Living Legacy Foundation of Maryland facilitates the donation and recovery of human organs and tissues for transplantation and research. Living Legacy provides advocacy, family support, and comprehensive public and professional education, and is committed to organizational excellence to enhance the organ and tissue donation and distribution processes.

Description:
The Living Legacy Foundation of Maryland is the not-for-profit health service provider of organs and tissues to the citizens living in Maryland with the exception of Charles, Montgomery and Prince George's counties. Living Legacy was incorporated in 1990, consolidating the former Maryland Organ Procurement Center and the Maryland Tissue Bank. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services accredits Living Legacy as an organ procurement organization, and the State of Maryland licenses Living Legacy as a Tissue Bank. The Living Legacy Tissue Bank is accredited by the American Association of Tissue Banks [AATB].
Living Legacy is governed by a 25 member Board of Trustees, which includes general public members, transplant recipient representatives, donor family members, as well as transplant physicians, surgeons and administrators from the two Baltimore organ transplant centers: the University of Maryland Medical Center and The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

History:
In 1983, the Greater Baltimore Organ Procurement and Perfusion Center [GBOPPC] based at and administered by the University of Maryland Medical Center became the Maryland Organ Procurement Center [MOPC]. It was approved as a tax exempt organization; received recognition from both federal and state governments; and was responsible for all aspects of organ donation and procurement, including organs transplanted in Maryland and outside of Maryland. MOPC took over the following major functions:

Evaluation of all potential donors
Maintenance of potential organ donors after pronouncement of death
Obtaining consent for organ donation from the next of kin
Retrieval of the kidneys
Coordination of the retrieval of all donated organs and tissues
Preservation of the kidneys
Placement of organs and tissues
Coordination of all out-of-state organ importation
Professional and public education
Reimbursement of all costs associated with organ and tissue donation

MOPC was associated with the two transplant centers, the University of Maryland Medical Center and The Johns Hopkins Hospital and it worked with the two Maryland Eye Banks, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the State Anatomy Board. It also served as a major resource for anyone seeking information about donation.

In 1991, the University of Maryland Tissue Bank and Laboratory merged with MOPC which changed its name to the Transplant Resource Center of Maryland [TRC]. TRC continues to provide all the services involved in organ and tissue donation, as well as has taken on additional roles, making Maryland a leader in organ and tissue donation.

The Tissue Bank continues to be responsible for the recovery, processing and distribution of allograft skin. It also recovers other allograft tissues, including heart valves, femoral veins and saphenous veins and bone.

The Transplant Resource Center has re-designed its Tissue Department to better meet the needs of the donor family; created a Hospital Development Department to reach out to its hospital partners; developed a Family Services Department to obtain consent and provide follow-up care to donor families; shifted the role of the Clinical Coordinator to focus more on the care of the potential donor; expanded the role of the Donor Services Center which works with the United Network for Organ Sharing [UNOS] to allocate the available organs for transplant; and created a new Volunteer Program. TRC is met with the challenge of educating the public on the ever-increasing need for more organ donors through Community Outreach and Public Relations. In 2004, TRC becomes a Donate Life Organization.

In 2007 the Transplant Resource Center of Maryland changed its name to The Living Legacy Foundation of Maryland.
