Our mission statement: Building community with uprooted people to serve the common good. RIM works with refugees, asylum seekers, and asylees as they adjust to life in the United States.
Description:
Core Values of RIM:
- Our work is community building.
- We work in an interfaith/ecumenical setting in a manner which avoids proselytizing and encourages each person in the practice of his own faith.
- RIM's programs foster a durable self-sufficiency.
- RIM offers support and ongoing training so the experience is enriching and skill-building for all participants.
- RIM bridges work for ethnic organizations.
- RIM affirms multicultural sharing in communities.
- RIM considers spirituality to be important in the healing process.
RIM's programs:
- "Clusters" of area congregations offer social services to newly arrived refugees or asylum seekers.
- RIM provides case management for clients to assess their needs and to make appropriate referrals for services.
- Spiritual Care Givers offer chaplaincy services to those detained in prison.
- RIM helps with job development through a computer lab with software training and through ESL tutoring.
- The Help Line offers information, referrals, and telephone counseling to immigrants. A growing list of languages includes French, Swahili, and Haitian Creole.
History:
In 1986, The Rev. Constance Hammond developed a chaplaincy program for the Immigration Naturalization Service Processing Center, which was located in the historic North End of Boston. For 10 years, volunteers visited and offered a variety of services in this facility. In 1995, RIM was incorporated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Lutheran Immigration Refugee Service has supported the detention and asylum work done by RIM for over 10 years. In 2001, RIM became a site for work with asylum seekers for Church World Service. In 2005, RIM became a Refugee Resettlement Site for Episcopal Migration Ministries. In 2006, RIM began to offer Case Management through the MA Office for Refugees and Immigrants.
