The Needham Community Council is a private, multi-service, non-profit agency responding to the diverse needs of Needham residents. The Council receives no public funding and depends on the generosity of the community to fulfill its mission: to extend hospitality to every Needham neighbor who turns to us for support. We assist Needham residents by providing food, holiday gifts and meals, transportation, medical equipment, English as a 2nd language tutoring, etc.
Description:
The Needham Community Council sponsors a variety of programs that support Needham residents. We have a food pantry, thrift shop, Nursing home boutique, volunteer drivers for medical appointments and general community access, ESL tutoring program, Child Assault Prevention seminars in Needham elementary schools, Suicide Prevention Program, medical equipment loan closet etc. Volunteers help support the agency by sorting clothing and household good donations, arranging and selling in our thrift shop, visiting residents of local nursing homes, delivering food items to housebound residents from our food pantry, assisting with special events and mailings, tutoring recent immigrants in English conversation, working with elementary students in our CAP [Child Assault Prevention] Program, driving local residents to appointments in the Needham area, etc.
History:
The Needham Community council was formed in the 1930's to support residents struggling to make ends meet during the depression. Since then we have developed new programs but our focus remains the same - people helping people.
