Hale Barnard Services for Older People provides residential and supportive services of exceptional quality for a diverse older population. Our residential programs offer an alternative to institutional care—a home-like place when “home” is no longer possible. Our goal is to enhance all aspects of living in the later years by offering meaningful choices, social, intellectual and spiritual stimulation and by honoring individual worth in the collective environment.

Description:
Hale Barnard Corporation is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization whose geographical service area is Boston, Massachusetts and is dedicated to assisting its clients in remaining independent, connected to, and involved in their communities via residential and
support services. Its clients include middle- and low-income elders, the disabled, and those on public assistance. The mission of this organization is to provide residential and support services of exceptional quality for a diverse older population. Residential programs offer an alternative to institutional care - a homelike place when "home" is no longer possible. The on-going goal of this organization is to enhance all aspects of living in the later years by offering meaningful choices, social, intellectual and spiritual stimulation and by honoring individual worth in the collective environment.

Hale Barnard’s programs serve residents of Hale House, a residential care facility, and individuals living in their homes throughout Boston. The Budget Management Program provides critical financial management and bill paying services to elderly and disabled clients living independently, keeping them free from homelessness and institutionalization. The Back Bay Club is a resource for elders from the area, providing structured social interaction and meals at Hale House, and the Social Service Coordination Project provides over 200 low-income tenants of the Boston Public Housing Authority’s buildings with translation services and social service referrals, home visits, crisis intervention, and recreational opportunities.

Hale House, a residential care facility located in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood, is a 60-bed facility providing housing and support services for elderly and disabled residents, regardless of their income and means. The building, which consists of five connected Victorian brownstones, was originally constructed in 1869, and was previously home to many noted historical Boston figures. The Bostonian Society honored historic Hale House with a plaque, designating the site as the birthplace of the Massachusetts Audubon Society, and the building has also been placed on the Boston Women’s Heritage Trail.

Residents of Hale House enjoy a variety of services, including all meals, 24-hour care, and a full schedule of activities. Residents range in age from 50 to 95 years, more than half qualify as low-income, and 20% are previously homeless or at risk of homelessness. Hale House affords residents more independence than a nursing home facility, yet it is not assisted living, as our residents require some monitoring of medications and health needs by nursing staff. This unique position in the spectrum of elder care services ensures that Hale House residents enjoy the comfort of knowing someone is always there if they need help, while maintaining their independence in a secure environment.

History:
Hale Barnard Services, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, was founded in 1973 by a group of Back Bay residents to provide shelter, health care and social services to elders in need. In 1984, Hale House merged with the Frances Merry Barnard Home, and was then able to start programs serving elders throughout Boston. We serve disabled younger adults as well as elders. We have over 30 years of experience, an excellent reputation, and an established and committed Board of Directors. We employ 30 people at Hale House, another off-site, three contracted staff, and we utilize over 75 volunteers at 1,400 volunteer hours per year. We house 56 elders and serve over 250 others throughout Boston each year.
