English At Large provides free English literacy instruction to adults throughout 20 Boston-area communities. Every year, our volunteers help hundreds of adults improve their English literacy and change their lives. Every day, those adults have more and more to say.

English At Large provides free English literacy instruction to Boston area adults. Learners receive the instruction they need when and where they need it.

Community volunteerism sits at the heart of English At Large. Every year more than 250 volunteers, including more than 150 tutors, reach out to local adult learners. Volunteers do not need to speak another language. English At Large provides training and support to volunteers of all skill levels.

Our one-to-one tutoring program targets instruction to each learner's specific goals and needs--like reading more to children, writing a resume, or speaking with confidence. Because instruction is not limited by a classroom schedule, teaching and learning can occur wherever and whenever tutors and learners can meet.

Our conversation group program allows intermediate to advanced English speakers to practice their new skills in a supportive environment. Volunteer-facilitated conversation groups meet conveniently at a wide array of libraries and community centers.

Our learners come from around the world; most are non-native English speakers. Their individual accomplishments represent a victory of hope and ambition. They are gaining citizenship, finding work, reading a book to a child for the first time, contributing to the communities in which they live.

Our supporters make everything possible. They include the Massachusetts Department of Education, the Acton-Boxborough United Way, and an array of businesses, associations, and individual contributors.

History:
Lexington resident Mildred Gilman founded what was then called the Eastern Massachusetts Literacy Council in 1970 as a volunteer-based organization. Now known as English At Large, the organization is proud to have helped more than 10,000 students improve their English literacy skills and achieve their personal goals.

The English At Large entrance is at the rear of the West Medford Congregational Church (clearly marked). There is an entrance for persons with disabilities at the front of the church on High Street. Please call first if you need any special accommodations. Driving Directions From I-93: Take Exit 32. Follow Route 60 West (which becomes High Street) about 1.3 miles to the West Medford Congregational Church (on left). The English At Large entrance is at the rear of the church. From Route 2: Exit at Route 60. At the end of the Exit Ramp, turn left toward Arlington. Continue on Route 60 through Arlington Center (1 mile from Route 2), then through two rotaries (another 0.6 miles), and across railroad tracks (another 0.6 miles). Continue 0.2 miles on Route 60 (which becomes High St) to the West Medford Congregational Church (on right).The English At Large entrance is at the rear of the church. Parking On-street parking is available on High Street, in front of the church, and on some streets around the church. However, many nearby streets are resident/permit-parking only, so be sure to read the signs before you park. Public Transportation From Boston / North Station, the Lowell line of the commuter rail stops at the West Medford Station. From the station, walk 0.2 miles east to the West Medford Congregational Church. The English At Large entrance is at the rear of the church. Bus 94 (Davis Square / Red Line subway - Medford Square) stops on High Street near the West Medford Congregational Church. The English At Large entrance is at the rear of the church. Bus 95 (Sullivan Square / Orange Line subway - West Medford) stops on High Street near the West Medford Congregational Church. The English At Large entrance is at the rear of the church.
