Cambridge School Volunteers, Inc. (CSV) is the agency responsible for recruiting, training, placing and providing support services to volunteers in the Cambridge Public Schools, grades K-12, during each school year.
Description:
CSV is the Cambridge Public Schools' designated liaison to the community for recruiting volunteers to work in grades K-12. At the elementary level, CSV places volunteers as classroom or library assistants, homework helpers, AVID mentors, MCAS tutors in its after-school programs, and in special math and literacy programs. At Cambridge Rindge & Latin School (CRLS), the city's only public high school, volunteers can serve as tutors in the Tutoring Center (before, during, or after-school), or in the before-school Drop-In Math Center, or as advisors/tutors to the Science Olympiad team or college essay writing program.
History:
Cambridge School Volunteers, founded in 1966, is a private, nonprofit organization that recruits, trains, places, and provides support services for volunteers in the Cambridge Public Schools. CSV's volunteers include business men and women, retirees, undergrad and grad students, corporate employees, and others from Cambridge and surrounding communities. Almost 1,000 volunteers work in the school system during the average school year. During the last 40 years, volunteers have helped thousands of Cambridge students with language arts, math, science, ESL, and other basic subjects, as well as art, music, physical education, computer education, and enrichment activities. In addition to programs involving individual volunteers, at least a dozen local corporations have paired with local elementary schools to spearhead such projects as Reading Buddies, NetPals and KeyPals.
