Citizen Schools, an after school and summer enrichment program, inspires and educates children while strengthening community through unique learning apprenticeships. The program challenges children to become apprentices and learn side-by-side some of Boston's most talented artisans, tradespeople and professionals -- Citizen Teachers who volunteer their time. Students learn by doing as they actually write children's books; design web pages; start businesses; build cabinets; perform original dances; cook gourmet meals; publish newspapers; and much, much more.

Description:
Citizen Schools is looking for you!

Citizen Schools works because of the dedicated individuals who volunteer their time to share their skills and knowledge with small groups of children at Citizen Schools campuses in Boston Public Schools across the city.

Apprenticeships are at the heart of Citizen Schools. Boston's best professionals, artisans, and trades people work directly with small groups of 9-14 year olds to develop amazing products and performances that are valuable to the community and make the kids and the adults say, "WOW!"

History:
Citizen Schools is in its sixth year and has served over 1,200 students with the help of over 1,500 volunteers. The program has grown from a pilot program serving 50 students at the Dever School in Dorchester to now operating in 10 sites in and around Boston.
