Concilio Hispano is a visionary, non-profit community organization dedicated to progressive social, economic, and political change, and to the promotion of active citizenship. We are committed to fostering the culture, self-identity, and advancement of Latinos and others in the United States. We work with our communities through innovative programs in education, health, social services and other areas critical to the well-being of our communities. Description:
As a community organization founded and managed by Latinos, Concilio Hispano's broad goal is to assist Latino individuals to develop their highest potential, improve their living conditions, and build a better future. The organization currently offers an integrated system of services including: English as a Second Language (ESL); High School Equivalency Diploma (GED) Preparation in Spanish; Native Spanish Literacy; Youth Services-Post secondary preparation, Skill Building and Socialization; Information and Referral; Interpretation and Translation; HIV/AIDS Prevention and Education; and Outpatient Substance Abuse Services.

History:
Concilio Hispano, Inc. is a nonprofit organization founded in 1969 to provide human services for Latinos in Cambridge, MA. As the Latino population grew in neighboring communities, Concilio expanded its target population to include Somerville and Chelsea. Concilio Hispano serves over 4,000 clients each year, providing vital educational and support services to a culturally diverse Latino population which includes Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Salvadorans, Guatemalans, Colombians, Hondurans, Nicaraguans, Cubans, and Mexicans with varying levels of integration, education, and literacy, and ranging in age from teen to elder. The staff and Board of Concilio Hispano are proud of the agency's status in the community and its notable achievements. Concilio Hispano is:
* Recipient of the 1998 'La Promesa' award from the National Latino Children's Institute, recognizing Concilio's model youth development program, AHORA, for its contributions to the healthy development of Latino children.
* Featured in 1999 'What Works for Latino Youth' from the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans.
* Invited participant: 1999 White House Convening on Hispanic Children and Youth, a forum examining challenges and opportunities and promoting promising efforts including the AHORA Program.
* Winner of the 1999 Isabel Allende/AmeriSpan Literacy Grant an award of up to $10,000 from 100% of the proceeds from the sale of Allende's critically acclaimed novel, Paula.

 Concilio Hispano is located in between Kendall Square and Central Square in Cambridge. Coming from Downtown Boston on Mass.Ave, Going east (Heading toward Harvard Square). Pass MIT and turn right onto Windsor Street. Continue 2 blocks, through the traffic signal at Main Street. Concilio Hispano is located on block on the Left, a red brick building on the corner.
