MISSION: Community Servings is dedicated to providing free home-delivered meals throughout eastern Massachusetts to people homebound with acute life-threatening illnesses, such as HIV/AIDS, breast cancer, lupus, and MS, who are unable to shop or cook for themselves.
Description:
Community Servings delivers over 700 meals daily to individuals their families. We provide our clients, their dependent families, and caregivers appealing, nutritious meals, reaching out to those in greatest need. Our goals are to help our clients maintain their health and dignity, provide nutritionally and culturally appropriate meals, preserve the integrity of their family, and send the message that someone cares. We are also strongly committed to providing nutrition education and counseling. Community Servings' daily meals are critical to the health and well being of men, women, and children living with an acute life-threatening illness. We design our meals to meet the complex dietary requirements of people coping with a devastating illness, helping our clients gain weight and prevent muscle loss. Our clients are struggling economically, with the toxic side effects of drug regimens, and the ravages of illness.
History:
Community Servings delivered its first hot meal in January of 1990. Today, we deliver 3,600 meals each week to individuals and families living with life threatening illness. Our clients come from very diverse backgrounds and represent many different ethnicities. Ninety-five percent, however, live at or below the poverty line. 60% are men, 40% are women, over 65% of our clients are African-American, Hispanic, Cape Verdean and Haitian. Children receive 20% of our meals and 75% of their caregivers are single parents.
