The Science Club for Girls is an interactive after-school program designed to inspire and encourage young girls (K-7) to pursue their interests in science and technology. Girls in grades 8-12 also work with the clubs as as co-mentors along with volunteers.

Volunteers engage in hands-on experiments with the girls, serving as both mentors and role models. The program serves to build self-confidence in these young girls and a love for the sciences.

Please come share your enthusiasm for science with young girls who are eager to learn! The impact you make will last them a lifetime. Female volunteers only please.

Description:
Science Clubs for Girls is a parent-founded after-school program to encourage girls in grades K-12 to succeed in science and technology. Our girls come from varied ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds and the majority attend public schools. Our programs are free to all the girls who participate.

In Cambridge, our programs are located at King Open (850 Cambridge Street), Cambridgeport (89 Elm Street), Fletcher Maynard (225 Windsor Street), and Amigos (100 Putnam Avenue) Schools.

In Boston, we serve the Tobin School (1st-3rd grades) in Mission Hill and the McCormack School in South Boston.

We also have programs in Lawrence, Newton and Framingham.

History:
Science Clubs for Girls was created fifteen years ago, by a group of concerned parents who wanted to offer their daughters every opportunity to pursue their academic interests. Published studies have shown that significantly fewer women pursue careers in science- and math-related fields than do men. This is likely due to many influences - classroom behavior and self-confidence included among possible factors. We believe that confidence in the classroom is essential to success in the future. The Science Clubs for Girls hopes to offer these young girls the encouragement and guidance to pursue their interests in the sciences with confidence and enthusiasm. The response to the program has been overwhelming. Over 400 girls in grades K-12 from Cambridge are involved with this program. Volunteers are the backbone of the clubs! Without them, we could not continue!
