Our mission is to increase citizen participation and integration into the community policing model. This allows for community members, as well as students seeking meaningful practicum experiences, to contribute to the betterment of their community.
Description:
Lowell Police Department Volunteers and interns attend the Citizen's Police Academy. Participants learn different aspects of the department and a wide range of criminal justice topics. Volunteers include Auxiliary police officers, community volunteers who assist LPD staff in neighborhood precincts, and student interns who are fulfilling practicum requirements.
History:
Before the Lowell Police Department adopted a community policing philosophy, problems in ensuring public safety in Lowell paralleled those nationwide. The Lowell Police Department realized that it needed to recognize the progress a traditional approach afforded while moving into the 21st century with a deeper problem-solving approach. The department, the community, and the city have since embraced a citywide community policing and problem-solving philosophy. The Lowell Police Department looks for every opportunity to partner with community members, neighborhoods and businesses to identify and solve problems.
