La Alianza Hispana is a community-based nonprofit organization that offers quality education in ESL and GED, as well as health promotion, elderly support, job skills and youth development services to Latino families and individuals in Roxbury and Dorchester areas. We also advocate for equal access to basic human services for all residents of Grater Boston. MISSION: La Alianza Hispana, Inc; is a community-based, nonprofit organization that provides linguistically and culturally appropriate services primarily to the Latino community of Greater Boston. La Alianza Hispana, Inc. also advocated for equal access to basic human services for all.
Description:
One of the strong points has been the capacity-building and preventive nature of our program designs. La Alianza has explicitly maintained the following values in its activities:
- community participation in program design and operation,
- bilingual, culturally competent and accessible services,
- a service approach incorporating families, individuals and community, and
- a focus upon the recognition and development of family, individual and community strengths as opposed to weakness in providing services.
These values become manifest in all our program designs. Family oriented mental health services often prevent the separation of mother and children. Adult education courses also teach "survival skills" including parenting skills , helping children succeed in school and more. Substance abuse treatment and prevention reunites and maintains families. Job training offers families the means to acquire a living wage and model successful behavior for children and community. Outreach programs for youth prevent substance abuse and provide the guidance and support that enable families to remain intact. Summer Camp allows working poor parents to advance themselves while their children learn skills that promote their sucess in school. Alianza,s bilingual, bicultural competence make us uniquely qualified to provide preventive and intervention services for Latinos and other families in the Roxbury-Mission Hill - Dorchester area. Our well established relashionship with various state and municipal agencies, other community based services and the community members themselves provides significant referral sources for families in need of a continuum of services. Our bicultural competence enables us to more quickly and accurately identify and obtain appropriate services delivered at an adequate intensity. Our tradition of grassroots leadership is consistent with the value of family participation in service delivery planning. Additionally, our experience enables us to extend our service array to include many new service opportunites.
La Alianza Hispana offers deep and extensive relation to the community. Particulaly because the Latino Community comprises about 40% of the population in the neighborhoods in which it operates its linguistically and culturally accessible services.
History:
Founded in 1970 by a group of Latino Neighbors who mobilized their resources, our agency has helped thousands of Latinos and community residents reach their goal of self-sufficiency. Most of our staff members are bilingual in English and Spanish and represent many cultures.
