CPA works for full equality and empowerment of the Chinese community in the Boston area. Our activities seek to raise the living and working standards of Chinese Americans and to involve ordinary community members in making decisions that affect our lives. We emphasize and provide education to develop both skills and awareness towards the goal of empowerment.
Description:
The Chinese Progressive Association (CPA) is a grassroots community organization. We are best known for our organizing around such issues as immigrant rights and political empowerment, workers' rights, and community control of land development and environmental justice. Ongoing programs and activities include a Workers Center to help immigrant workers learn about and attain their rights on the job, an Adult Education Program of English as a Second Language and US Citizenship classes, the Chinatown Empowerment project that seeks to strengthen Chinese immigrants' political clout and effectiveness in the struggle to preserve Chinatown in the face of massive redevelopment, and the Chinese Youth Initiative to promote community involvement of high school-aged youth.
History:
CPA was founded in 1977 by elderly residents, immigrant parents, and youth. It evolved out of a series of community organizing campaigns during the 1970s, such as the demand for a Chinese parent voice in the Boston school desegregation process and for community control of redevelopment in Chinatown. Over the years, CPA has continued to be the primary organization focused on the grassroots participation of ordinary Chinese immigrant community members.
