The Masssachusetts Advocacy Center's (MAC's) mission is to improve living conditions and life opportunities for the children of the Commonwealth.

Description:
MAC currently has three major program areas: 1) State Inclusion Project, which works to protect the legal rights of students with disabilities, and to develop non-discriminatory implementation of education reform policies and practices; 2) Children's Law Support Project, which provides assistance to students who have been suspended or expelled from school and is increasingly focused on the connection between family violence, child trauma, and its impact on children's learning; and 3) the Boston School Reform Project, which promotes leadership training, capacity building, data analysis, public policy advocacy and action planning to develop an informed, organized constituency for reform of the Boston Public Schools.

History:
Founded by Hubie Jones in 1969 as the Task Force on Children Out of School, MAC has demonstrated a commitment to the well being of children that is virtually unparalleled in terms of longevity and results. MAC has applied a multi-strategic approach to impact the multiple issues confronting children from low-income, racially diverse, limited English speaking families, and children with disabilities. The Center has actively concentrated on public education, child health and welfare, and children's legal rights, with particular attention to special education and reform of public schools, in Boston and statewide. In the past decades, MAC has been a pioneer in policy development, legislation, litigation, compliance monitoring, administrative negotiation, research and report writing, and data analysis. While maintaining this capacity, in recent years MAC has consciously increased its capability to work as an intermediary with church, parent, community organizations, and school districts to inform, mobilize, train and develop local leadership to take action on public education issues.
