Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly is a national, nonprofit, volunteer-based organization committed to relieving isolation and loneliness among the elderly. We offer to people of good will, the opportunity to join the elderly in friendship and celebration of life.

Description:
Our programs are designed to reflect our mission. We are probably best known for our holiday programs during which we deliver a hot meal and flowers to 500 elders on Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter/Passover. Year round, we offer Friendly Visiting, matching a volunteer up with an elder whom he/she visits 4-5 hours a month. Our On-Call Program provides gap-filling direct service to our elderly friends, including: helping someone to a doctor's appointment, delivering emergency food, picking up prescriptions or other supplies. Our Special Events are parties and outings twice a month. All of these services are provided free to our elderly friends, who live in Boston, are over 70 years of age, who live on very limited means and who have little or no family contact.

History:
Our organization started in France in 1946 when the dream of a French nobleman was realized: to give people of all faiths the opportunity to dedicate themselves to the service of the poor --- most notably the elderly. Originally, times being what they were, the people were all men --- hence, the name. But since the mid-1960's, women have been on staff as well. We are currently located in eight countries. In the U.S. we are located in Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Minneapolis, San Francisco, Miami, Philadelphia, Houghton County, Michigan and Omaha. We started in Boston in 1979.
