Citizen Schools inspires and educates children while strengthening community through unique learning apprenticeships.
Description:
Citizen Schools is a leading national education initiative that uniquely mobilizes thousands of adult volunteers to help improve student achievement by teaching skill-building apprenticeships after-school. Our programs blend these real-world learning projects with rigorous academic and leadership development activities, preparing students in the middle grades for success in high school, college, the workforce, and civic life.
History:
In 1994 Eric Schwarz and Ned Rimer started Citizen Schools with a group of 20 5th graders and only 2 apprenticeships: Journalism and First Aid. By early 1995 Citizen Schools registered as a non-profit organization and taught a full summer program. Within a year, the full after-school program was running including apprenticeships taught by volunteer Citizen Teachers, Explorations, and Homework Time. In the Spring of 2000 Citizen Schools was operating on 11 Boston campuses and served over 1,000 students. In 2003 Citizen Schools moved out of Boston and became a multi-state program serving 1,800 students at 24 sites. Citizen Schools currently serves middle schools students at 30 sites in 5 states. We continue to grow rapidly due to our passionate staff and community outreach initiatives.
