Summer Internship/Camp Counselor at The Greenhouse School

We have had a variety of interns and other volunteers from various countries, cultures and backgrounds over the years, as well as from U.S. colleges and universities. This exposure has been of great benefit to our kids, as well as to our visitors. We encourage those interested to browse the other opportunities on these pages as well as our agency listing to gain a more complete picture of our unique school setting. Our summer session is more than a school and more than a day camp. We consider ourselves a year round school, and our summer routine reflects this emphasis by including academics. However, our sense of schooling is different from most environments, and both our summer and fall/winter schedules involve copious other activities. We have a small pool in our school, which comes in handy all year round, but especially during the summer months. We also take the kids on a series of overnight camping trips every two weeks. The children also plan, plant, tend and harvest our own garden, and last summer we organized our own olympic games. We make paper for note cards and other products, which we also use as a fundraiser for our programs. Our summer lasts from the middle of June to the first week in September, and we keep the kids as busy as we can! We have no formal application, but request a resume and a cover letter from those interested. There is a stipend, though not a big one. It's a demanding but rewarding experience for the right person, and a chance to work alongside experienced teachers in an enriching environment.

Potential interns should above all be enthusiastic and willing to work hard. Art and sports backgrounds are most helpful. Interest or experience in swimming, ceramics, gardening, video production, chess, Spanish, camping etc. are helpful but not absolutely necessary. You can also help us out a lot simply by posting a link to this page on your site, and/or forwarding it to those who might be interested.

An enjoyable day participating in the activities of the Greenhouse School

Celebrating the Gandhi Day of Service, a day where 11 Asha-MIT volunteers participated in community service, we went to the Greenhouse school on Oct. 5th for a day. It was an interesting day for us to learn about this private school that provides opportunities for children of the working class of Salem/Lynn. We were involved in painting activities, making paper products and selling t-shirts. Asha volunteers are involved in the field of education in India, and the Greenhouse school gave us a better understanding about the working environment of alternative schools, which cater to the not-so-wealthy. We all enjoyed our day at the Greenhouse school, and felt good to be part of the school for a day. Dan and Julia welcomed us in the morning, and after talking to us about the school, gave us our tasks to make the day productive. We were quite satisfied with our day and effort. It's nice to see people taking enormous pride in what they do.

I had an excellent experience. I would strongly recommend it. They have an very fun, hardworking staff. One of the most enjoyable days I've had in a long time made even better by knowing that what I'm doing is making a contribution.
