Special Olympics Mission

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for persons eight years of age and older with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.

The vision of Special Olympics Maryland is to help bring Special Olympics athletes into the larger society under conditions whereby they are accepted, respected and given the chance to become useful and productive citizens.

Special Olympics Maryland At A Glance

Special Olympics Maryland is a statewide year-round sports program for Maryland's children and adults with intellectual disabilities and/or closely related developmental disabilities. Sports training and competitions include:

  • Alpine, Modified Alpine & Cross Country Skiing
  • Aquatics
  • Athletics (Track & Field)
  • Basketball
  • Bocce
  • Bowling (Duck Pin & Ten Pin)
  • Cycling
  • Equestrian
  • Floor Hockey
  • Golf
  • Gymnastics
  • Ice Skating (Figure & Speed)
  • Motor Activities Training
  • Powerlifting
  • Sailing & Kayaking
  • Soccer
  • Softball
  • Tennis
  • Volleyball

Throughout Maryland, more than 10,000 athletes ages six and above participate in Special Olympics local programs.

History:
The history of Special Olympics Maryland

In 2005 Special Olympics Maryland celebrates it's 35th Anniversary!
The concept for Special Olympics was born in the early 1960s when Eunice Kennedy Shriver started a day camp for people with intellectual disabilities at her home in Rockville, Maryland. The first International Special Olympics Games were held in 1968 at Soldier's Field, Chicago with 1,000 athletes participating from 26 states and Canada.
