The Old Town Commercial Association's mission is to facilitate the socioeconomic development of Lansing's Old Town area through the promotion of historic preservation, business recruitment and community outreach.
Description:
The OTCA works to revitalize the historic Old Town district. From recruiting businesses to hosting festivals to spring cleaning to planting flowers, we do it all. We're a grassroots driven organization with only two full-time employees. Nearly all of the work that we do is done with the help of volunteers.
We follow the Main Street model and have four committees that work on a number of projects. The organization committee works on volunteer recruitment and retention, as well as the funding of the organization. The economic restructuring committee works on business recruitment and retention. The promotions committee works on special events and festivals and promoting Old Town as a whole, including through newsletters and websites. The design committee works to improve the area's aesthetics through facade grants, banners, streetscape projects, planting flowers, trash pick-up, etc. These four committees are overseen by an eleven member board of directors. Our board is a volunteer and working board. We don't believe in members in name alone. Our volunteers work to make Old Town the best that it can be, on a minimal budget. We do anything that we're physically able to help improve our neighborhood.
History:
We have been around since 1996 as a 501(c)3 organization. We've completed a number of projects ranging from hosting festivals to providing facade grants to rehab buildings. In 2007, we won the IKEA Main Street Makeover contest, earning a $50,000 makeover divided between ten Old Town businesses, as well as a $5,000 cash prize. Our organization continues to work hard to grow the neighborhood.
