Fitchburg Cycling is dedicated to (1) the growth and continuation in perpetuity of the annual Fitchburg Longsjo Classic as a community-based, world-class, international cycling competition memorializing Art Longsjo, and (2) the development of regional programs to promote excellence, pride and fitness in youth by telling the Art Longsjo story and by promoting the sport of cycling for recreation and competition.
Description:
The Fitchburg Longsjo Classic is hosted by Fitchburg Cycling Club, anon-profit organization run by volunteers, who donate enormous effort and endless hours simply for the love of the race. From the core race committee to course marshals to caravan drivers to set-up and clean-up crews, we are dependent on the talent and energy of these individual volunteers to successfully run the race. Over the many years, the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic has developed a reputation as an excellent, well-run event characterized by an extraordinarily warm community welcome.
History:
The race currently known as the Fitchburg-Longsjo Classic was first held in 1960 as the Fitchburg-Longsjo Memorial Race. It was renamed by the USCF in 1980, and is one of the few races in the country to be designated as a "classic." The first race was organized by Guy Morin as a memorial to his teammate Art Longsjo, along with local officials and Terry Longsjo, Art’s widow.
