The Foresight Project's mission is to create and implement educational initiatives that are effective in connecting students in a meaningful way with their own future world. Our goal is to reach main-stream students in a way that cascades out to their larger communities. Our strategic view is to align with existing academic tracks and programs in the schools.
Description:
We believe that climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions is the most important and difficult challenge that our planet faces. Therefore, our initial (current) program is Imagining Tomorrow: Alternate Energy Futures, which takes the form of a creative writing and video contest. This program engages high-school students in exploring the implications of choices that we make or fail to make regarding energy technology and policies. The agency itself is a start-up, one person operation. Our current program has proven to be effective, but in order to continue and expand, there is a great need to add active board members, major volunteers, and others who are willing to help on a more limited basis. We need additional people in all areas: outreach to schools, fund-raising through grant-writing as well as general promotional efforts, and recruiting the support of companies in the clean technology industry. Our goal is to expand the program by increasing the number of schools that participate in Massachusetts, by making this a national program, and by looking for other ways to support learning about climate change and clean energy and technologies.
History:
We ran a pilot program as a near-future creative writing contest in Massachusetts in 2006. In 2007 we expanded by adding videos as a medium, and also initiated "Clean Energy Awards" at the Massachusetts State Science and Engineering Fairs. This is in keeping with our strategy to implement programs that easily integrate into existing curricula and programs in the schools, respecting the many demands on teachers from administrators, parents, and others, as well as for the limited time that students, particularly at the high-school level, have available. The anecdotal evidence of the Imagining Tomorrow creative program is that it is unusually effective in creating a personal experience for the students, and in creating a shift in their thinking on the need and opportunities for clean technology and climate solutions. It will be some time before we can measure the effect of these changes in terms of active citizenship, career choices, and changes in the communities, but this is our ultimate goal.
