Attention Volunteers! - The Longsjo Needs You!
The Fitchburg Longsjo Classic is able to happen smoothly year after year because of the generous help of local volunteers. We need race marshals, sandwich runners, set-up / tear down crews, medical personnel and countless other positions. No experience necessary, just a great attitude and a love for community and great racing! Volunteer Descriptions
Marshals: This is where we need the most help. Marshals help guide racers around the course by being in place at key intersections and positions along each race course. Marshals also help answer questions from residents about road closures, detours and events. This is a perfect opportunity for church groups, scouts, teams, clubs, and anyone else who wants to help out.
Course Set-Up Crew: One of the keys to starting the day on schedule is to have an efficient staging crew. These volunteers are out early to set-up finish line barriers, various tents, neutral water stations, and fine tune the hay placement. They also help set out info signs for racers and spectators. This is a very short shift (6AM-9AM) but is one of the most important.
Tear Down and Transfer Team: This important team is in charge of breaking down the race staging, and shifting the infrastructure to the next day’s course. The more that this crew is able to do, the easier it is for the set-up crew the next morning. This is also a fairly short shift (roughly four hours) and starts at about 4PM each day with hay placement.
Sandwich Wranglers: These volunteers help pass out food and water to other volunteers, officials, police, and support staff around the course. We don’t keep volunteers very long if we don’t feed them!
Caravan Drivers: We have the pace cars covered by Corvettes United but we have a significant need for additional vehicles that follow each category, especially during the Wachusett Mountain Road Race. You’ll need to provide your driver’s license number, VIN, and insurance information. We can’t allow SUVs or trucks unfortunately.
Registration Personnel: We need approximately twenty volunteers for this important job. On Wednesday July 2nd, riders arrive at the Best Western Royal Plaza and these volunteers will facilitate racers picking up their numbers and packets and assist in answering their questions about the race and the community.
Race Packet Stuffing: This is a fun opportunity for volunteers to get together, introduce themselves, and help assemble nearly 1,000 packets of race supplies for racers and volunteers. The more people we have helping, the quicker the work gets done! Free food and beverages for all. Packet stuffing will be happening at 6PM, Thursday June 26, 2008 at the Longsjo office (773 Main St., Fitchburg).
If you're planning to be a caravan driver, we need some vehicle and insurance information. Also if you're under 18, you'll need a parent or guardian's signature. This opportunity is sponsored by: Fitchburg Longsjo Classic
