The mission of the AAC is to save lives by increasing the number of homeless animals adopted. This is done primarily through creation of an inviting downtown facility where the public can be educated as to the plight of homeless animals in this country, as well and meet and interact with evaluated rescued animals in programs devised to increase adoptions into compatible and caring homes.

Description:
The AAC enables homeless animals to be seen in a relaxed, downtown location. The Center houses 10-14 dogs and 12-15 cats at a time. This comparatively small number makes for a less chaotic atmosphere and reduces stress on both the animals and visitors. This, in turn, allows for better interaction between animals and their prospective adoptive parents, as well as opportunity for staff and volunteers to get to know the animals' individual personalities.

The cats are housed in a free roaming room "Kitty City" and it's attached cattery, a fully enclosed outdoor space where they can soak up the sun, enjoy the fresh air, and watch the birds and butterflies that visit the garden next to the cattery. The dogs roam about the Center and Boutique, nap in the comfortable enclosures of "Elona's Dog Lounge", or romp with friends in the Doggy Play Yard. The dogs stay at the Center only during hours of operation. Every night and during weekends, when the Center is closed, the dogs go home with foster families.
In addition to fostering, the community is invited to become involved in a variety of ways. Volunteer programs include dog walking and caretaking Kitty City, as well as promoting adoption through the media and special events. All volunteers play an essential role in helping these abandoned animals, not only through caring for them but also by acquainting themselves with the animals as individuals. This information is crucial in ensuring compatibility with new families and takes some of the unknown out of bringing abandoned animals into new households, allowing for a less-risk adoption.

All AAC animals are fully vaccinated and spayed or neutered.

The AAC can also assist qualified prospective adopters in their search for a specific breed or type of animal compatible with their lifestyle through networking with other rescue groups and animal welfare organizations. This provides another opportunity for the public to adopt rather than purchase a pet.

Last but not least, the AAC is here to educate people on how to stop the killing of adoptable pets. Of the 68 million owned dogs and 73 million owned cats in the US, only 20% have been adopted!! Yet every hour in US shelters 480 adoptable animals are put to death. Clearly, there ARE enough homes! We are here to shatter the many negative stereotypes about abandoned animals, encourage and help people to choose to ADOPT instead of buying a pet, and to educate people as to the immense importance of SPAYING AND NEUTERING their pets, and the many other responsibilities of pet ownership. Together we hope to put an end to the killing of adoptable animals, and envision a future where there are no more homeless pets.
