The Muscular Dystrophy Association is a voluntary health agency -- a dedicated partnership between scientists and concerned citizens aimed at conquering neuromuscular diseases that affect more than a million Americans.

Description:
The Muscular Dystrophy Association invites you to join us for 1 week of summer fun in 2008! We serve children ages 6 through 21 who live in the tri-state area and have been diagnosed with a neuromuscular disease.

We offer this opportunity to adults from the tri-state area and beyond who are 18 years of age or older to serve as Volunteer Counselors and 21 years old to serve as Pre certified Lifeguards.

The MDA summer camp is located in Spring Valley, NY. Camp is a magical place offering a wide range of activities specially designed for young people who have limited mobility or use wheelchairs.

Your experience can make a difference in the life of a child with a neuromuscular disease.
Volunteer Camp Counselors and Lifeguards are needed to assist campers in activities by meeting their physical and emotional needs in a manner consistent with the standards of MDA and to help carry out a program of adapted water and recreational activities designed to be enjoyable and safe.

Counselor training is provided at no cost!

2008 Camp begins August 17 and ends August 23

This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity to help give kids
"The best time of their lives."

Please inquire with questions, interest or to receive an application.

Camp is just one of the programs MDA offers those we serve. MDA scientists are in the forefront of gene therapy research and have uncovered the genetic defects responsible for several forms of muscular dystrophy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease), childhood spinal muscular atrophy, and several other neuromuscular conditions.
The Association's comprehensive service program includes medical examinations, flu shots, support groups, MDA summer camps for youngsters and assistance with purchase of wheelchairs and leg braces.
To learn more please call MDA.

History:
MDA was created in 1950 by a group of adults with muscular dystrophy, parents of children with muscular dystrophy, and a physician-scientist studying the disorder. Since its earliest days it has been energized by its number-one volunteer and national chairman, entertainer Jerry Lewis.
The Association's programs are funded almost entirely by individual private contributors. MDA seeks no government grants, United Way funding or fees from those it serves
