Connecticut River Coastal Conservation District
[ View Opportunity ]
Last updated on July 8, 2008

The mission of the Connecticut River Coastal Conservation District (CRCCD) is to promote the sound use and management of natural resources in the lower Connecticut River watershed and coastal areas.

Description:
CRCCD is a nonprofit organization providing technical assistance and education in soil and water conservation, erosion and sedimentation control, stormwater management, and watershed protection. Our goal is to protect and improve natural resources by expanding environmental awareness, knowledge and action. Our programs and services are provided to municipal staff and land use commissioners, private residents, the agricultural community, developers and the public. Our major program providing volunteer opportunities is the Connecticut River Watch Program (CRWP), a nationally recognized and award-winning citizen monitoring program for the Connecticut River and tributaries. Through CRWP we involve community volunteers in river monitoring activities to build awareness about river resources and water quality issues, and collect scientifically credible data to use to identify and address water quality problems. CRWP, begun in 1992, has active programs in five regional watersheds: the Mattabesset/Coginchaug, the Eightmile, the Salmon, the Hockanum/Tankerhoosen, and the Pequabuck.

History:
CRCCD, formerly the Middlesex County Soil and Water Conservation District, was formed in 1946 by state statute to assist the state Department of Environmental Protection along with 7 other county-based districts in Connecticut. In 2003, all 8 county-based conservation districts in Connecticut were reorganized along watershed lines to better address natural resource concerns at the watershed level.
