Horizon House helps people with mental illness, mental retardation, drug and alcohol problems, and/or homelessness. Each year, our residential, day treatment, vocational, educational, and case management programs serve over 3,000 individuals in Southeastern Pennsylvania and the state of Delaware.

Description:
Horizon House is a community-based, non-profit organization that provides a comprehensive array of rehabilitation, treatment, and support services to individuals with mental illness, mental retardation, drug and alcohol addiction, and/or homelessness. We adhere to the principle that all individuals should be encouraged to, and can, reach their highest potential when given choices and the tools to do so. Our services strive to support the fullest possible integration of the individual as an active and productive member of his/her own family and community.

Horizon HouseÂ's services are based upon an individualized capability-based approach consistent with psychosocial rehabilitation (PSR) upon which the Agency was founded in 1952. This approach helps people enhance their independent living skills and breaks the cycle of isolation that has so often defined their lives. Providing hope and encouragement, educational and job related assistance, a home-like secure place to live, and daily living skills training are essential parts of our service approach.

History:
Horizon House, Inc. was founded in 1952 as a support group for former mental hospital patients who had been released from psychiatric facilities into the community. Since then, the agency has expanded its scope of services to address the needs of adults with substance abuse problems (1972), mental retardation (1973), and those who are homeless (1984). Many of the people served by Horizon House have multiple disabilities.
