Church World Service is a cooperative ministry of 35 Protestant, Anglican and Orthodox denominations, providing sustainable self-help and development, disaster relief, and refugee assistance around the world. CWS works in partnership with indigenous organizations in more than 80 countries. CWS carries out its worldwide mission through the following major programs: Education and Advocacy, Emergency Response, Immigration and Refugees, Mission Relationships and Witness, and Social and Economic Development.

Description:
Within the U.S. CWS assists communities in responding to disasters, resettles refugees, promotes fair national and international policy, provides educational resources, and offers opportunities to join a people-to-people network of local and global caring through participation in CROP Hunger Walks to fight local and global hunger; the Tools & Blankets Program for self-help and development programs; and the Kit Program (school, health and baby kits). These programs help people meet immediate and long-term needs as they gain self-sufficiency. There are 22 CWS Regional Offices in the U.S. and the Wisconsin Regional Office is in Madison.

History:
Founded in 1946, Church World Service was born in the aftermath of World War II and is celebrated its 60th year in 2006. A number of denominations came together to form an agency "to do in partnership what none of us could do as well alone." The mission: feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick, comfort the aged, shelter the homeless.
In 1947, CWS, Lutheran World Relief and the National Catholic Welfare Program created a joint community hunger appeal-CROP (Christian Rural Overseas Program).
Farmers gathered food from their fields and shipped it overseas to feed war-torn Europe. Then in 1969 the first CROP WALK was born to raise funds to combat both local and global hunger. Today, nearly 1,800 CROP WALKS are held annually across the nation, raising more than $15 million. Wisconsin hosts about 70 WALKS every year, has 8,500 participants, and raises $700,000+. 2008 is the 34th year for the Madison Area CROP Hunger Walk.
